(AP) ? C.J. Harris scored 23 points and Wake Forest beat No. 2 Miami 80-65 on Saturday to snap the Hurricanes' 14-game winning streak.

Codi Miler-McIntyre added 15 points while Harris was 5 for 5 from 3-point range to lead the Demon Deacons (12-14, 5-9 Atlantic Coast Conference).

They shot 54 percent, led by double figures for the entire second half and reeled off 12 straight points to pull away for their biggest victory under third-year coach Jeff Bzdelik.

Durand Scott had all 17 of his points in the second half for the Hurricanes (22-4, 13-1), the last of the schools in the six BCS conferences to get its first league loss.

Shane Larkin added 13 points, Trey McKinney Jones had 11 and Kenny Kadji finished with 10, but Miami was outrebounded 36-35 by the younger, smaller Demon Deacons.

Still, the Hurricanes clawed back into the game with an 18-8 run that started late in the first half and ended on Scott's jumper with 14 ? minutes left that made it 46-41.

He added a layup 2 minutes later to pull Miami to 50-45, and it looked as if the Hurricanes were going to find a way to keep their charmed run rolling.

But two possessions later, Harris turned a turnover into a fast-break dunk that started a 12-0 run that put the Demon Deacons on the fast track to their biggest victory since they knocked off then-No. 1 Duke four years ago when they were in the top five themselves.

As the final seconds ticked away, Harris and Travis McKie ? two of the three available non-freshmen on scholarship ? exchanged a flying chest-bump before the Wake Forest students rushed the court for the second time in little over a month.

After that last run, Miami didn't get closer than 11 while Wake Forest pulled away late to bring a surprisingly lopsided end to the best start to ACC play since the 1998-99 Duke team went 16-0 in the league.

McKie finished with 10 rebounds and five blocked shots for the Demon Deacons, who ? after two years of being one of the ACC's worst teams ? have transformed themselves into a tough out in home conference games.

They improved to 5-2 against ACC foes at Joel Coliseum. The losses ? to Duke and Georgia Tech ? are by a combined six points.

They thoroughly outplayed the Hurricanes from start to finish, hitting shots from all over the court against a Miami team that was perhaps fatigued after gutting out its last three wins by a combined 12 points.

Harris hit three 3-pointers during a 2-minute stretch of a 28-8 run that put Wake Forest up 19 on the Hurricanes ? who hadn't trailed by more than 13 in any ACC game.

Arnaud William Adala Moto's fast-break layup with just over a minute before the break put the Demon Deacons up 42-23.

Meerkats use subordinate animals as guinea pigs when approaching novel threats

Feb. 18, 2013 ? In their environment, wild animals are exposed to countless threats, be they predators, diseases or natural obstacles to get over, such as gorges or rivers. In the course of evolution, they have developed specific behavioural responses to allow them to deal with these risks. In recent times, numerous human-made threats have been added to the naturally-existing ones, such as dangerous roads to cross. On the evolutionary time scale, it is excluded that the animals have evolved a whole new repertoire of adaptive responses to these risks.

Simon Townsend is a behavioural biologist at the University of Zurich, and Nicolas Perony is a systems scientist at ETH Zurich. They teamed up to understand how animals cope with novel human-made threats by studying groups of wild meerkats, a species of socially-living mongooses.

The leader gives way when crossing the road

To this end, Townsend observed several meerkat groups in the Kalahari Desert. Through the reserve runs a rather heavily-frequented road, which effectively cut the animals' home range in half. On their way from one burrow to another, the meerkats are often forced to cross the road. Based on field observations, the researchers discovered that in most cases it was the highest-ranked animal -- the dominant female -- who led her group to the road. However, upon reaching the road she yielded to a lower-ranked individual, who took up the role of "guinea pig" to cross the road first.

Reorganisation at the front

From the observational data collected in the Kalahari, Nicolas Perony could develop a relatively simple computer model to simulate for the first time the behaviour of a meerkat group, in which there are distinct social roles. By constructing this model, the researchers were aiming to better understand what they had observed in the field. The model simulates a group of eight meerkats, one of which Perony assigned the role of leader.

In the simulations the eight agents encounter a virtual barrier, which has an effect similar to the road's. The scientists could then vary the height of the barrier -- the level of the risk it represents -- for each individual. The model clearly showed the reorganisation taking place at the front of the group. The ETH researcher thus concluded that the dominant female and the subordinate individuals have a markedly different appreciation of the danger presented by the road. This difference in risk perception may be enough to explain how the leading individual falls back to a less exposed position upon reaching the road, and leaves it to a subordinate individual to take the lead.

A 'test individual' to minimise the risk

The dominant female's highly risk-averse behaviour appears selfish. However, it makes a lot of sense for the long-term survival of the group and the closely-related individuals in it. Meerkats in fact minimise the threat to the whole group, even though it may imply for the "test individual" to lose its life: the survival of all the group members may depend from that of the alpha individual. Observations from other researchers indeed show that the predation of the dominant female can lead to the destabilisation of the whole group.

Perony and Townsend interpret the observed behaviour at the road as the adaptation of a phylogenetically-old behavioural response, transposed to the context of a danger hitherto unknown to them. The animals can thus apply innate behavioural mechanisms to a novel, human-made threat. It is however unclear whether the meerkats really perceive the traffic on the road as a risk. A road is above all an open area in the animals' environment, in which there is no shelter to flee from predators such as eagles or jackals, says Townsend. By nature, the animals tend to avoid open areas in dangerous situations. "In case of an imminent threat, meerkats use the cover provided by bushes and other elements of their environment," explains Perony. This study raises hopes that wild animals can adapt to a certain extent to the increasing perturbation of their natural environment.

Meerkats

Meerkats have long been studied at the Kalahari Meerkat Project, located within the Kuruman River Reserve (South Africa). Animals from the study groups are dye-marked to allow for individual identification. They are habituated to the presence of human observers. Meerkats live in groups of up to 40 members. Each group is dominated by a pair of alpha individuals, who are the only ones allowed to reproduce. The other individuals help the dominant pair to care for the young, which are often related to them. The meerkats' group structure is highly complex und has long fascinated behavioural scientists.

'Deceptive Affection' May Actually Keep Relationships Going | Psych ...

By Rick Nauert PhD Senior News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on February 18, 2013

Deceptive Affection May Actually Keep Relationships Going Now that Valentine?s Day is over, the sobering reality is that the days that follow February 14 are associated with a spike in relationship breakups.

This behavior may be explained by a new study that suggests affectionate behavior is not all that is seems.

?Gestures such as hand-holding, kissing and cuddling could be indicators that your partner is mad at you,? said DePaul University?s Sean Horan, Ph.D., an assistant professor of relational communication.

In the study, Horan examined how and why deceptive affectionate behavior occurs. Deceptive affection means that an individual in a romantic relationship chooses to express affection he or she does not actually feel.

Remarkably, this behavior is relatively common. Horan and co-researcher Melanie Booth-Butterfield, Ph.D., discovered that non-married individuals expressed deceptive affection about three times a week to romantic partners.

?Couples use deceptive affection because they feel negatively about their partner and want to save face, avoid embarrassing their partner or sidestep a situation that may land them in hot water,? said Horan.

Examples of this kind of deception include lying about one?s own feelings or feelings about a partner and expressing affection instead of negative feelings, the researchers said.

One participant confessed she didn?t want to hug or cuddle her boyfriend because she was in a bad mood but did so anyway.

Another told his girlfriend he loved her to get off the phone faster so he could watch a basketball game. And when one woman?s boyfriend asked if she liked his new haircut, she lied and said she did, in order to spare his feelings.

Couples use verbal and non-verbal affection in hopes that a sweet caress or profession of love will mask their true feelings, according to the study.

Despite the harmful connotations, Horan argues this isn?t necessarily negative behavior.

?Using affection to lie appears to be a regular activity in romantic relationships that most people don?t seem to mind,? he said. ?In fact, deceptive affection might actually help maintain a relationship.?

The study is forthcoming the journal Communication Quarterly.

Australian billionaire?s plan for Chinese-built Titanic II gets flood of interest

HONG KONG - The Australian billionaire who?s planning to build a high-tech replica of the Titanic at a Chinese shipyard has received an ?overwhelming? response from people who want to be the first paying passengers.

Representatives for Clive Palmer, who in April announced a preliminary agreement with state-owned Chinese company CSC Jinling Shipyard to build Titanic II, said Saturday that his shipping company had received inquiries from people in the United States, Britain, Asia and South America.

Interest has been so strong that ?we?ve probably had half a dozen people already offering more than $1 million to get on the maiden voyage? slated for 2016, said James McDonald, global marketing director of Blue Star Line Pty. Ltd.

The strong interest comes even though construction has not even started on the ship. Blue Star officials said they hoped to sign a final contract soon with CSC Jinling, based in Jiangsu province. They would not reveal how much Titanic II is expected to cost.

The Titanic was the world?s largest and most luxurious ocean liner when it hit an iceberg in the North Atlantic and sank on April 15, 1912, killing more than 1,500 people.

Palmer has said the new ship will be just as luxurious as the original but also have the latest navigation and safety technology. The designers will be assisted by a historical research team as they try to make the ship look as close as possible to the original. The diesel-powered ship will even have four smoke stacks like the coal-powered original, but they will be purely decorative.

Raymond Tam, Blue Star?s director of Asia operations, said the contract for Titanic II will be a shot in the arm for China?s fledgling shipbuilding industry as it tries to compete globally.

?China has been one of the strongest players in building bulk carriers and container vessels,? Tam said. ?In terms of building luxury ships, they have a small market share. However, Titanic II will be the start of a massive Chinese challenge to the European luxury shipbuilders.?

Palmer built his fortune in real estate and coal. Australia?s BRW magazine estimated his net worth last year at $4 billion, although Forbes puts it at $895 million.

Ozzie eyed O's 3B coach job, remains on sidelines

By Jon Heyman | Baseball Insider

JUPITER -- Ozzie Guillen talked to the Orioles about becoming their third base coach, but with the job going to longtime minor-league manager and coach Bobby Dickerson, the former Marlins manager remains in Chicago, working on his foundation, considering some TV work and mulling his next baseball step, which could include managing in Asia.

Guillen inquired about the Orioles job, according to someone familiar with the situation, though Guillen's son Ozzie Jr., who handles some of his business affairs, disputed the notion that Guillen actually applied for the job, suggesting only that his father may have had a brief third-party discussion regarding the O's job. Guillen Jr. did say his father wouldn't rule out coaching jobs, saying, "If it was the right situation, he would consider it."

Dickerson was promoted from Orioles bullpen coach after serving as an organizational coordinator following 12 years as a minor-league manager for the Diamondbacks and Cubs.

Orioles GM Dan Duquette declined to discuss the field of candidates, saying only, "We had a lot of candidates but decided to promote from within the Orioles organization."

Guillen Jr. said his father, the longtime White Sox manager who guided them to the 2005 World Series title, might like to get back into managing "in the future,'' and suggested he might consider managing "in Asia," mentioning that Andruw Jones and some others he knows well have gone to Japan.

Guillen said his father wass offered a couple television jobs, which shouldn't be a surprise considering his effervescent personality, and may do a little TV this year while mulling his next on-field move.

The Marlins have moved on quietly to the more low-key Mike Redmond after Guillen's disastrous season in Miami but have an eye on Guillen's next baseball move for one big reason. If Guillen secures a high-paying on-field job, his new salary would reduce the Marlins' commitment of $2.5 million a year for the next three years.

One Marlins person said what everyone's thinking. "I'd like him to get a managing job, and get him off the payroll."

That's right, on Monday, February 18, we honor our founding father by partaking in fantastic sales on everything from mattresses to dishwashers, TVs, and apparel.

Mattress Sales Have Already Begun

The origins of mattresses being particular to Presidents' Day are difficult to verify. No one really knows how it got started. "George Washington slept here" may be one inspiration for big mattress sales, but the best explanation is a simple one. "It takes two people to make the decision of buying a mattress," says Sarah DuBois, spokeswoman for Sleep Number. "Since many have President's Day off of work, it's a great opportunity for two people to shop together."

Nothing needs the approval of both parties more than a mattress purchase.

For President's Day, all beds are on sale at Sleep Number, including up to 50% off the Sleep Number iLE bed plus a free comforter and 18-month financing. Sears' Mattress Closeout Event offers 50% to 60% off mattresses, with free delivery and haul away on many mattresses. Macy's has $100 off some Tempur-Pedic mattresses and up to half off some closeout models, making it possible to nab a Sertapedic Queen Mattress Set for just $247 (a low by $228). Overstock has 10% off already discounted memory foam models.?

Geometric prints, tribal warriors inspire Issa London

LONDON (Reuters) - Brazilian-born designer Daniella Helayel, whose clothes have become a firm favourite of Kate Middleton, sent her models down the catwalk on the second day of London Fashion Week in printed chiffon kaftans, woven jacquards and geometric patterns.

The label is known for its colourful printed dresses and elegant evening gowns.

Models strode down the catwalk in thick jackets with shearling and fur linings over geometric printed dresses, knitted jumpers and wide brimmed hats topped with eagle feathers.

The collection was inspired by the rugged landscape of the Navajo Indians, Helayel told Reuters backstage after the show.

"There are lots of feathers, lots of feather prints, it was also inspired by rugs, different textures and body paints," said Helayel, who counts the Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William's wife, among her customers.

There were no plans however, in spite of recent speculation, to launch a maternity line to the brand, she added.

Thick woven jacquards were shown in a blend of warm ochres, rich caramels, sandy beiges and mossy greens, and layered over pleated trousers, shirt dresses and fitted jackets.

Full-length dresses were cinched in at the waist with wide belts, and loosely tailored suits were paired with patterned shirts - as part of Helayel's experimentation with different textures and abstract patterns this season.

"The prints are always amazing, and they're always relevant. They are completely timeless," said Brix Smith Start, stylist and TV presenter.

"But it's also the fit and the easy elegance of the dresses. It's great for day wear but then you can re-accessorise for night, and the gowns are great. It's a brand that I've watched for a long time," she added.

The collection also featured simple knitted separates in burnt orange, russet red and deep plum, with the dresses layered over turtle neck sweaters. Models wore their hair loosely braided down their backs, with simple pared down make-up.

"It was a much cooler woman this season," said Helayel. "She didn't want to be made up... she is very nomadic, so her look was no make-up, smudgy eyes, pale skin, very fresh, and the hair like quite messy."

Monochrome patterns were printed onto figure-hugging dresses, shirts and skirts, and fitted dresses were embellished with colourful beaded collars and feathers.

The designer finished the show with an elegant blue evening gown in crepe de chine fabric and intricate jewelled beading, fit perhaps for a future queen to wear.

Tornado Puts Hold on Eureka School Museum

HATTIESBURG, Miss.-The Eureka School in downtown Hattiesburg was under reconstruction to be turned into a museum in honor of the Freedom Summer of 1964.

The building was built as a school house for African American students in the early 1920s.

?This is a 1921 building and it's well built,? said Rick Taylor, the executive director of the Hattiesburg Tourism Commission. ??We?ve lost some of the ceiling on the first floor as the water has caused the wood to turn loose and fall to the floor.?

Latoya Norman who is the museum director of the African American Military History Museum also works closely with the Eureka School.

"We were hoping to have it opened by 2014,? she said.

She said parts of the building were suppose to be ready by this June.

?Now that's completely off the table,? Norman said. ???

Taylor said the museum process started back in 2009. The outside structure and the parking lot were completely finished.

?We are on phase three right now which was a restoration to the cafeteria and the rest rooms,? he said.

After the tornado did it?s damage, Taylor said the days of rain following Sunday caused even more problems.

?We need to get a roof back on the building to prohibit further damage,? he said.

?It wreaks havoc on the time frame we had for opening this museum,? said Taylor.

The Tourism Commission is not sure how much the damage will cost them to rebuild.

Meteor explodes over Russia, nearly 1,000 injured

MOSCOW (AP) ? A meteor streaked across the sky and exploded over Russia's Ural Mountains with the power of an atomic bomb Friday, its sonic blasts shattering countless windows and injuring nearly 1,000 people.

The spectacle deeply frightened many Russians, with some elderly women declaring that the world was coming to an end. Many of the injured were cut by flying glass as they flocked to windows to see what the reason was for such an intense flash of light.

The meteor ? estimated to be about 10 tons ? entered the Earth's atmosphere at a hypersonic speed of at least 54,000 kph (33,000 mph) and shattered into pieces about 30-50 kilometers (18-32 miles) above the ground, the Russian Academy of Sciences said in a statement.

Amateur video showed an object speeding across the sky about 9:20 a.m. local time, just after sunrise, leaving a thick white contrail and an intense flash.

"There was panic. People had no idea what was happening," said Sergey Hametov, a resident of Chelyabinsk, a city of 1 million about 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) east of Moscow.

"We saw a big burst of light, then went outside to see what it was and we heard a really loud, thundering sound," he told The Associated Press by telephone.

The meteor released several kilotons of energy above the region, the science academy said. It was probably about 2 meters (6 ? feet) across, about the size of an SUV, said Richard Binzel, a professor of Planetary Science at MIT.

The shock wave blew in an estimated 100,000 square meters (more than 1 million square feet) of glass, according to city officials, who said 3,000 buildings in the city were damaged. At one zinc factory, part of the roof collapsed.

The meteor hit less than a day before Asteroid 2012 DA14 is to make the closest recorded pass of an asteroid to the Earth ? about 17,150 miles (28,000 kilometers). But the European Space Agency in a tweet said its experts had determined there was no connection ? just cosmic coincidence.

The Interior Ministry said 985 people sought medical care after the shock wave and 44 of them were hospitalized. Most of the injuries were caused by flying glass, officials said.

There was no immediate word on any deaths or anyone struck by space fragments.

Meteors typically cause sizeable sonic booms when they enter the atmosphere because they are traveling so much faster than the speed of sound. Injuries on the scale reported Friday, however, are extraordinarily rare.

"I went to see what that flash in the sky was about," recalled resident Marat Lobkovsky. "And then the window glass shattered, bouncing back on me. My beard was cut open, but not deep. They patched me up. It's OK now."

Another resident, Valya Kazakov, said some elderly women in his neighborhood started crying out that the world was ending.

Russian-language hashtags for the meteorite quickly shot up into Twitter's top trends.

Lessons had just started at Chelyabinsk schools when the meteor exploded, and officials said 204 schoolchildren were among those injured. Amateur video footage showed a teacher speaking to her class as a powerful shockwave hit the room.

Yekaterina Melikhova, a high school student whose nose was bloody and whose upper lip was covered with a bandage, said she was in her geography class when a bright light flashed outside.

"After the flash, nothing happened for about three minutes. Then we rushed outdoors. I was not alone, I was there with Katya. The door was made of glass, a shock wave made it hit us," she said.

Russian television ran footage of athletes at a city sports arena who were showered by shards of glass from huge windows. Some of them were still bleeding.

Other videos showed a long shard of glass slamming into the floor close to a factory worker and massive doors blown away by the shock wave.

The vast implosion of glass windows exposed many residents to the bitter cold as temperatures in the city were expected to plummet to minus 20 Celsius (minus 4 Fahrenheit) overnight.

The regional governor immediately urged any worker who can pane windows to rush to the area to help out.

Some meteorite fragments fell in a reservoir outside the town of Chebarkul, the regional Interior Ministry office said. The crash left an eight-meter (26-foot) -wide crater in the ice.

Meteroids are small pieces of space debris ? usually parts of comets or asteroids ? that are on a collision course with the Earth. They become meteors when they enter the Earth's atmosphere. Most meteors burn up in the atmosphere, but if they survive the frictional heating and strike the surface of the Earth they are called meteorites.

The site of Friday's spectacular show is about 5,000 kilometers (3,000 miles) west of Tunguska, which in 1908 was the site of the largest recorded explosion of a space object plunging to Earth. That blast, attributed to a comet or asteroid fragment, is generally estimated to have been about 10 megatons; it leveled some 80 million trees.

Scientists believe that a far larger meteorite strike on what today is Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula may have been responsible for the extinction of the dinosaurs about 66 million years ago. According to that theory, the impact would have thrown up vast amounts of dust that blanketed the sky for decades and altered the climate on Earth.

The meteor could have produced much more serious problems. Chelyabinsk is an industrial town long held to be one of the world's most polluted areas, and the area around it hosts nuclear and chemical weapons disposal facilities.

Vladimir Chuprov of Greenpeace Russia said the Russian government has underestimated potential risks of the region. He noted that the meteor struck only 100 kilometers (60 miles) from the Mayak nuclear storage and disposal facility, which holds dozens of tons of weapons-grade plutonium.

A chemical weapons disposal facility at Shchuchye also contains some 6,000 tons (5,460 metric tons) of nerve agents, including sarin and VX, about 14 percent of the chemical weapons that Russia is committed to destroy.

The panic and confusion that followed Friday's meteorite crash quickly gave way to typical Russian black humor and entrepreneurial instincts.

Several people smashed in the windows of their houses in the hopes of receiving compensation, the RIA Novosti news agency reported.

Others quickly took to the Internet and put what they said were meteorite fragments up for sale.

One of the most popular jokes was that the meteorite was supposed to fall on Dec. 21 last year ? when many believed the Mayan calendar predicted the end of the world ? but was delivered late by Russia's notoriously inefficient postal service.

The dramatic event prompted an array of reactions from prominent Russians.

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, speaking at an economic forum in the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk, said the meteor could be a symbol for the forum, showing that "not only the economy is vulnerable, but the whole planet."

Vladimir Zhirinovsky, a nationalist leader noted for his vehement statements, blamed the Americans.

"It's not meteors falling. It's the test of a new weapon by the Americans," the RIA Novosti news agency quoted him as saying.

Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said the incident showed the need for leading world powers to develop a system to intercept objects falling from space.

"At the moment, neither we nor the Americans have such technologies" to shoot down meteors or asteroids, he said, according to the Interfax news agency.

Jim Green, NASA's director of planetary science, called the back-to-back celestial events an amazing display.

"This is indeed very rare and it is historic," he said on NASA TV. "These fireballs happen about once a day or so, but we just don't see them because many of them fall over the ocean or in remote areas. "

Guns, healthcare, and the meaning of a decent society

Gun control, healthcare, and countless other issues inevitably require us to define what we mean by a decent society, Reich writes.

By Robert Reich,?Guest blogger / February 15, 2013

Gun dealer Mel Bernstein takes down an AK-47 assault rifle from a sales rack at a shooting range and gun store, east of Colorado Springs, Colo. Every society must necessarily decide for itself what decency requires, Reich writes.

Raising the minimum wage from $7.25 to $9 should be a no-brainer. Republicans say it will cause employers to shed jobs, but that?s baloney. Employers won?t outsource the jobs abroad or substitute machines for them because jobs at this low level of pay are all in the local personal service sector (retail, restaurant, hotel, and so on), where employers pass on any small wage hikes to customers as pennies more on their bills. States that have a minimum wage closer to $9 than the current federal minimum don?t have higher rates of unemployment than do states still at the federal minimum.

A mere $9 an hour translates into about $18,000 a year ? still under the poverty line. When you add in the Earned Income Tax Credit and food stamps it?s possible to barely rise above poverty at this wage, but even the poverty line of about $23,000 understates the true cost of living in most areas of the country.

Besides, the proposed increase would put more money into the hands of families that desperately need it, allowing them to buy a bit more and thereby keep others working.

A decent society should do no less.?
