Canada sits 22nd in 2012 Paralympic medal table

After eight days of competition, the Canadian Paralympics team is making its country proud. Sure, they sit outside the top 20 in the overall medal count, but the Paralympics rank their nations by their number of gold medals, not their total count.

With only four golds, Canada sits just behind South Africa and New Zealand for 20th place. But, with 22 total medals, the Canadians have been a force to be reckoned with, sitting in 13th place overall.

On Wednesday, Nanoose Bay's Michelle Stilwell added to Canada's total with a silver medal in the 100m wheelchair racing event, and Vancouver's Josh Vander Vies (a UBC grad) earned the country's first-ever medal in Boccia the day before, winning bronze with his partner Marco Dispaltro.

It was also announced this week that Canada will host the 2013 Paralympic (IPC) World Swimming Championships, which will follow FINA's world championships. Host cities have not yet been announced.
